WEAVE Release State of Sexual Assault in Sacramento County
To close out Sexual Assault ACTION Month 2026, WEAVE released the State of Sexual Assault in Sacramento County. The report calls out the essential role of designated Rape Crisis Centers in California and the mandates they are entrusted to fulfill. The report highlights trends as well as service and demographic information of sexual assault survivors served by WEAVE in 2025.
“WEAVE, and Rape Crisis Centers throughout California, serve a critical role in supporting survivors of sexual assault,” shares WEAVE CEO Beth Hassett. “WEAVE Advocates are available 24 hours a day to respond immediately to victims in the aftermath of a sexual assault. In addition, WEAVE offers supportive services for survivors who may not reach out until years after an assault. Regardless of when a survivor needs help, WEAVE is there.”
Every Rape Crisis Center is mandated to employ staff who meet the state requirements to be a Sexual Assault Counselor. The Sexual Assault Counselor designation includes completion of a state approved 40-hour sexual assault training, eight hours of annual sexual assault continuing education, and the direct supervision of the County’s designated Rape Crisis Center.
By meeting these stringent requirements, WEAVE’s Sexual Assault Counselors hold confidential communications privilege. This means that a Sexual Assault Counselor cannot be compelled to disclose information shared with them by the victim without the victim’s express written consent.
Additionally, WEAVE coordinates the County’s Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). The SART is a multi-disciplinary team comprised of representatives from WEAVE, local law enforcement agencies, Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, forensic medical professionals, and the Sacramento County Crime Lab. The SART meets throughout the year to review cases, engage in training and capacity building, and identify opportunities to improve processes and systems to support survivors and hold perpetrators accountable.
