Position Summary:

The Children’s Advocate will provide support for children of parents residing in WEAVE’s residential services programs. The Children’s Advocate will offer educational, recreational, and art activities for children and help parents to connect with services available in the community related to children’s needs. This position qualifies as a mandated reporter per California Penal Code Section 11165.7(a).

Essential Functions:

Residential Children’s Program

Provide Strengths Model case management to children and parents residing in WEAVE’s residential programs.

Facilitate children’s activities and educational groups, including providing play care during scheduled times while parents are in groups and/or receiving other WEAVE services.

Maintain cleanliness and organization in the children’s area.

Support parents by helping them to connect with services in the community that will assist them with the care of the child. For example, child development services, food, clothing, school supplies, medical services, among others.

Follow Child Protective Services mandated reporting requirements for suspected child abuse and neglect.

Develop program activities which are trauma-informed, victim centered, culturally responsive, and age-appropriate and promote acceptance and valuing of cultural and other diversity, and self-respect and respect of others;

Participate in staff meetings and provide information for case management;

Serve as liaison to school personnel; provide opportunities for children to do homework and model positive parenting;

Collaborate with Charter School personnel and help enroll children in Charter School;

Collaborate with the Children’s Counselor to provide comprehensive services

Offer engaging activities and interaction with clients and children to build trust and rapport with clients and their children.  

Facility maintenance and housekeeping duties, as assigned and needed;

Other Responsibilities

Attend and participate in staff meetings and in-service training, and annual retreat;

Complete WEAVE’s classroom training (69 hours) and maintain continuing education (after hired);

organizations and community service providers

Maintain accurate and timely timesheets

Maintain a working knowledge of domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse and child abuse laws and reporting responsibilities and file abuse reports, as needed

Be familiar with legal, medical, housing, educational and social service agencies and resources in the community which may be of use to residents

Other duties as assigned

ADA Job Characteristics:

Work environment is primarily in an  24-7 shelter facility setting.  Local travel (driving) may be required to transport clients and attend off-site meetings.  Lift and carry up to 25 pounds up to waist length, extend both arms above the head and/or reach below the waist, stoop, squat, crawl, bend the back to open lower-level filing drawers, or to retrieve stored items, climb on stools, steps and/or ladders to dust, sweep and/or mop to clean. Sit and/or stand frequently.  Use fine manipulation (hands and wrist) to operate a keyboard, take notes, complete and file reports, file and copy documents.  Corrected vision to normal range.  Speak in normal vocal tone and range, and communicate clearly and concisely to and with others.  Apply normal reasoning and detail as required in the accomplishment of job duties.  

Qualifications:

BA/BS in social service field or 3 years of related experience

Ability to work effectively with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds;

Ability to relate in a supportive, non-judgmental manner and maintain a client-centered approach within the parameters of agency policies and procedures;

Understanding of the impact of trauma and ability to provide trauma-informed support

Crisis intervention, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills;

Excellent oral communication skills;

Ability to utilize conflict management skills to intervene and separate clients in confrontational situations;

Ability to work both independently and as a team member;

Valid California Driver’s License and reliable transportation, including vehicle insurance;

Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
