WEAVE focuses fundraising on teens
Launches matching grant challenge
SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CA – WEAVE is where nearly 800 women and children go each year to seek shelter from abusers. Among them are teenagers who have been caught in the turmoil of domestic violence and need a special place to hang out and just be kids.
Now in a new 12,000-square foot facility, Women Escaping A Violent Environment is ready to better serve clients with extra space and services, including a new “teen room”.
With brightly colored walls and furnishings, the room still needs finishing touches such as a big screen TV, computers, games, and most importantly, a teen advocate who will offer counseling and guidance to teens during a critical time of their lives.
“We try to do some prevention and intervention with students and kids around domestic violence and sexual assault, understanding what healthy relationships look like and help them to understand that they can live violent-free lives when they grow up,” said Celeste Chambers of WEAVE.
WEAVE has launched a Safehouse Campaign to generate funds for completing and furnishing its expanded facility which includes three wings with separate kitchens, living and dining areas, and connecting bedrooms for women and their children.
It has also received a grant of up to $35,000 from the estate of a late volunteer that will match 50 cents of every dollar donated toward the teen room.
The offer expires September 30 and WEAVE hopes to receive $70,000 to maximize the grant money.
