Safehouse Support Line Advocate

Under the direct supervision of the Residential Services Manager, the Safehouse Support Line Advocate serves as a Safehouse Advocate and provides coverage for WEAVE’s 24-hour support and information line outside of business hours from WEAVE’s confidential Safe House location. As a Residential Advocate, this position provides support, assistance, and advocacy to WEAVE’s residential clients when not answering Support Line calls.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

24-hour Support and Information Line

  • Provide information about WEAVE services and other appropriate referrals to callers.
  • Provide triage and crisis intervention counseling via telephone.
  • Provide danger assessment and safety planning for crisis line callers.
  • Identify and report cases of suspected child and elder abuse to the appropriate authorities.
  • Conduct screenings of clients requesting emergency shelter.
  • Provide accurate summary and data entry information of all calls and services requested.

 

Residential Safe House

  • Provides advocacy, assistance, and referrals for clients.
  • Maintain high visibility and availability throughout shelter and initiate contact with residents, covering phone and gate access when needed.
  • Provide emergency transportation
  • Provide crisis intervention counseling, advocacy, information and referrals to individuals calling the agency’s 24-hour support line when other coverage of the line is not available
  • Provide support and information to agency volunteers, as needed
  • Maintain accurate client records and statistics in a timely manner
  • Maintain close communication with other shelter staff

Other Responsibilities/Duties

  • Attend and participate in agency meetings, staff meetings and in-service training’s
  • Complete WEAVE’s classroom training and counselor certification program and maintain certification
  • Develop positive working relationships with other local organizations and agencies
  • Maintain accurate and timely timesheets
  • Maintain a working knowledge of domestic violence, identify and report sexual assault, elder abuse and child abuse laws and reporting responsibilities and file abuse reports, as needed
  • Be familiar with legal, medical, housing, educational and social service agencies and resources in the community which may be of use to residents
  • Assist with the overall organization of the spaces through the facility.
  • Assist in the maintenance of current community resource referral list
  • Provide buddy training and support to new volunteers and staff in crisis intervention techniques and other topics related to domestic violence and sexual assault
  • Model appropriate intervention techniques for volunteers
  • Regular Attendance
  • Other tasks as assigned

ADA Job Characteristics:

Work environment is primarily in an office/call center setting.  Lift and carry 25 lbs., extend both arms above the head and/or reach below the waist, stoop, squat, crawl, bend the back to open lower-level filing drawers, or to retrieve stored items, climb a ladder or stairs, or use an elevator.  Sit frequently.  Use fine manipulation (hands and wrist) to operate a keyboard, take notes, complete and file reports, file and copy documents.  Corrected vision to normal range.  Speak in

normal vocal tone and range, and communicate clearly and concisely to and with others.  Apply above average reasoning and detail as required in the accomplishment of job duties.  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • AA degree and 2 years experience or 5 years of experience or any combination of education and experience to meet job requirements. 
  • Experience with domestic violence and sexual assault services preferred
  • Excellent communication, both written and verbal
  • Excellent crisis intervention, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Bilingual/bicultural individual preferred
  • Computer literate: Microsoft Word
  • Complete WEAVE’s 68-hour classroom training counselor certification program (post-hiring requirement) and attend amount of required in-services to maintain certification
  • Provide copy of valid California driver license, have reliable transportation, and submit current proof vehicle insurance
  • Satisfactory results from DOJ background check.
