Position Summary: 

Under the direct supervision of the Legal Director, the Bilingual Legal Advocate & Paralegal provides legal and administrative support to the WEAVE Legal Program. The Bilingual Legal Advocate is responsible for daily administrative support of the legal department, including staff attorneys and the Director, in providing services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking. The Bilingual Legal Advocate will interact directly with clients on regular basis as directed.

In addition to administrative support duties, this position also has the opportunity for paralegal duties if a qualified Paralegal applicant is selected. Said duties include providing forms assistance, document translation, legal pleadings preparation, legal research and writing and other paralegal tasks. Some tasks may be performed on a fee-for-service basis, requiring the employee to track and record time worked for billing purposes. 

Responsibilities:

Administrative:
• Calendar and maintain court appearances, hearings, and trials.
• Create and maintain physical and electronic legal files.
• Perform legal administrative tasks such as serving, mailing, filing or retrieving legal documents, as directed.
• Schedule court reporters and interpreters, as directed.
• Assist to screen clients and schedule appointments with staff, as needed in conjunction with other 
administrative staff.
• Assist with translating standard department documents.
• Other duties as assigned.

Paralegal:
• Assist staff attorneys with case management, hearing preparation, discovery, trial preparation, and other 
legal support duties.
• Work with clients to gather evidence and other necessary documents related to client’s case.
• Communicate with other law offices, law enforcement, district attorney’s office, DCSS, contractor providers 
and other community partners.
• Assist clients with preparation of legal forms and applications, including translating forms for Spanish- 
speaking clients who must complete forms in English.
• Perform legal research and writing projects as directed
• Assist with WEAVE Family Law Workshops as necessary, including providing translation services or 
conducting workshops when volunteers cannot provide coverage.
• Remain compliant with continuing education requirements for paralegal profession
• Perform other legal and administrative duties assigned.
Bilingual responsibilities (when applicable):
• Accompany attorneys and clients to Court for interpretation as directed.
• Participate in meetings with, and interpret for, Spanish-speaking clients, as directed.
• Draft Spanish/English correspondence as directed.

Skills and Abilities:
Ability to manage office functions efficiently, organize work, establish priorities and maintain good interpersonal relations and communications with lawyers and support staff. Ability to interpret case law, statutory code and legal opinions and reviews. Ability to draft legal pleadings, correspondence and legal research. Ability to review case files and summarize case status for next steps. Ability to work with victims and survivors to obtain information and documents needed to move cases forward.

Preferred Qualifications:
• ABA Paralegal Certificate
• 2-5 years’ experience working in a law office or legal department.
• Graduate from a recognized college or university with major course work in legal studies, business 
administration or management, finance, human resources, technology or marketing, or comparable work 
experience.
• Knowledge of Essential Forms
• Notary Public

Minimum Qualifications:
• Detailed oriented and able to manage & prioritize multiple tasks at once
• Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft office suite and database management
• Ability to work with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault who are in crisis in a culturally 
competent manner
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Successfully complete WEAVE’s peer counselor training program (post-hiring requirement)
• Valid California Driver’s license, reliable transportation, and current vehicle insurance
• Satisfactory results from a criminal background check
