Supporting Survivors During & After COVID 19
The schedules of our legal team were already packed when shelter at home orders were issued and courts temporarily closed. The reality is that 85% of the victims WEAVE serves in other programs have a legal barrier to safety.
The calls to our Legal Line started immediately. How do I get a restraining order? What did the closures mean for upcoming hearings? How do handle custody exchanges with a violent ex-partner?
We pivoted quickly – keeping in close communications with the courts and understanding what the impact would mean. Looking for legal precedence to protect victims and their children. We continue the answer the questions with the information we have – knowing it could change at any moment.
Every victim whose cases were in process will need us when the courts reopen. A growing number of others will need help, too, navigating the legal system to ensure the safety of themselves and their children. The fallout will continue for months into the future.
We will be there but we need your help. Before COVID 19, we needed to raise more than $100,000 a year to sustain our current legal services. We must fill the gaps created by lost revenue and ramp up to meet the demand. We will need to fund continued technology improvements to provide critical legal services.
Your gift to Legal Services ensures we are here today to answer every call. To provide assurance. To help victims in immediate need access emergency protective orders still being heard by the courts. Your donation means stability for our future operations when the number of victims will increase and schedules are packed with rescheduled hearings and new requests.
