On May 7, hundreds of non-profits in the Greater Sacramento region celebrated the Big Day of Giving (BDOG)! Big Day of Giving is held annually to raise much needed funds for non-profits doing vital work for our community. Held every first Thursday in May, thousands of people give back to their favorite causes. This year during this exciting 24 hours, over $15 million was raised to support the amazing people and work in this region that are the backbone of our community.

Pride Month is both a celebration and a reminder of the work still ahead. At WEAVE, we are committed to ensuring that LGBTQ+ survivors feel seen, supported, and safe when seeking help. Everyone deserves access to services that affirm their identity and experiences.

Last year, 5% of the survivors WEAVE served self-disclosed that they identify with an identity other than heterosexual/straight. We know that we still have much work to do to ensure that everyone in the LGBTQ+ community knows that WEAVE is a welcoming space to seek safety and healing.

Recent reports have highlighted multiple murders of Black women across the country—many at the hands of current or former partners. These tragedies are not isolated incidents, but part of a longstanding and deeply rooted reality.

Black women experience domestic violence at higher rates, are 2.5 times more likely to be murdered by men than white women, and in nearly 90% of cases, they knew the person who killed them. Systemic barriers too often make it harder to access timely, culturally responsive support—putting lives at greater risk.

On April 21, WEAVE CEO Beth Hassett and COO Allison Kephart participated in the Attorney General’s Office of Community Awareness Response and Engagement (CARE). Hassett and Kephart joined other victim services leaders in a round table discussion addressing urgent needs facing victims of violent crime in California – including victims of domestic and sexual violence. The discussion coincided with National Crime Victims’ Rights Week 2026.

HerScope Club at UC Davis

The HerScope Club at UC Davis, a student organization dedicated to advancing women’s health, recently supported WEAVE through a thoughtful philanthropy initiative. In February, club members came together to create homemade scrubs and bath salts to donate to survivors, and also assembled postpartum gift baskets filled with essentials like baby bottles, wipes, and hygiene items. Their generosity helps provide comfort and care to survivors and their children during critical moments.

The Rape Prevention and Education (RPE) Coalition

The RPE project is a five-year demonstration project that aims to engage the South Sacramento community in prevention education for sexual and intimate partner violence. Running from 2024 to 2029, the project aims to enact local policy change, in the hopes of creating safer spaces for the LGBT+ community, improving community environments, and transforming gender norms. The approach is to build the RPE Coalition to implement these objectives.
