Safehouse Children’s Advocate

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Residential & Crisis Response Services, the Children’s Advocate will provide child care for children and support to mothers residing at the safehouse.  The Children’s Advocate will offer educational, recreational and art activities for children. 

Safehouse Children’s Program (Primary duties)

  • Maintain the children’s center facility and offer play care during scheduled times.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements; identify, assess and report cases of suspected child abuse and neglect to Child Protective Services;
  • Develop program activities which are victim centered and culturally appropriate and promote acceptance and valuing of cultural and other diversity, and self-respect and respect of others;
  • Participate in staff meetings and provide information for case management;
  • Serve as liaison to school personnel; provide opportunities for children to do home work and role model for mothers on how they can help their children with homework;
  • Collaborate with Charter School personnel and help enroll children in Charter School;
  • Collaborate with the Children’s Counselor to provide comprehensive services

Safehouse Advocate Duties (Secondary duties as needed and assigned to support safehouse operations)

  • Support line counseling;
  • Safehouse intake assessment and transportation;
  • Counseling and advocacy for clients;
  • Facilitate house meetings and support groups;
  • Facility maintenance and housekeeping duties, as assigned and needed;
  • Serve as back up to Children’s Counselor, if qualified/certified.

Other Responsibilities

  • Assist with the training and supervision of new staff and volunteers;
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and in-service training’s, and annual retreat;
  • Complete WEAVE’s classroom training and counselor certification program;
  • Maintain accurate and timely timesheets on a daily basis;
  • Maintain inventory and supplies; purchasing
  • Other duties as assigned;

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in social service field and 1 year experience, or AA/AS degree and 3 years experience, or high school diploma and 3 to 5 years related experience.
  •  Ability to work effectively with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds;
  • Ability to relate in a supportive, non-judgmental manner and maintain a client-centered approach within the parameters of agency policies and procedures;
  • Crisis intervention, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills;
  • Excellent oral communication skills;
  • Clear and legible writing and good grammar and composition skills;
  • Ability to lift supplies up to 25 lbs up to waist height; 
  • Ability to lift child up to 25 lbs;
  • Physical ability to respond quickly to assist a child within facility grounds who may be injured or at risk of injury;
  • Ability to assess and remedy safety and security hazards;
  • Ability to utilize conflict management skills to intervene and separate clients in confrontational situations;
  • Ability to work “on-call” on rotation basis with other shelter staff to ensure overnight crisis line coverage;
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member;
  • Bilingual/bicultural preferred.
  • Valid California Driver’s License and reliable transportation, including vehicle insurance;
  • Willingness and ability to work weekends, holidays and evenings;
